17 – A Decent Night’s Rest

“What in the world is going on?”

A man with a scruffy beard muttered, sitting in the half-destroyed inn.

“Why are those gentlemen fighting each other? Aren’t they on the same side?”

“Who are those people?”

A chubby man at the adjacent table continued to eat, asking nonchalantly.

“Are you a noble from some remote village? Don’t you know Wolfgang?”

“Is that red-haired person Wolfgang?”

“Yes, that’s him.”

“Then, who’s the person getting beaten next to him? Is he a demon?”

“Judging by the armor, he looks like a knight from the Terosa Kingdom…”

“Terosa? But why are they fighting each other?”

“Well, isn’t that strange?”

“By the way… I didn’t know a human body could bend like that…”

The chubby man couldn’t take his eyes off Wolfgang, who was relentlessly beating the guard captain.

“I’ve only heard about it… Wolfgang can tear apart the jaws of giant demons with his bare hands… seeing that strength in person, it makes your bones tremble.”

Upon the bearded man’s words, the chubby one turned his gaze to Wolfgang and mumbled softly.

“The taste of the food is ruined.”

Krrraaaahhh!

As the survivors from the inn, spared by Wolfgang, exchanged various stories about the ongoing spectacle, the guard captain screamed in agony, his cries weaving into the night sky like stars.

“The audience seems to like it, Captain.”

“Well… I will… say it. Please…”

“Don’t you have anything you want to hear? By the way… did you know? They say that the human body has about 230 joints. Interestingly enough, it’s almost the same as the number of heads of my subordinates that you disguised as and wiped out.”

Like a snake, Wolfgang twisted and broke the joints of the Captain’s body.

Naming one sacrifice after each joint.

Whenever the Captain lost consciousness from shock, Wolfgang took out a recovery scroll from his pocket and woke him up without fail.

“…Please… kill… me…”

Once again, the Captain, who regained consciousness through the recovery scroll, begged instinctively.

Sniffle.

Perfect timing.

The desperate voice of the Captain and Wolfgang’s stomach growling overlapped at the same time.

“I’m hungry.”

Wolfgang threw the Captain he had been holding onto onto the ground.

As the Captain’s body bent and crumpled, he bled from the shock.

“Let’s fill our stomachs and then continue.”

Wolfgang sat on top of the fallen Captain’s body and sighed deeply.

The Captian, crushed by an imperfect body, could not make a sound and only vomited blood.

Ignoring it, Wolfgang searched every corner of his body to see if there was anything to fill his stomach.

Despite searching diligently, the only thing that came out was dust and his screams.

The exruciating hunger caused anger to rise up to the very top of Wolfgang’s head.

Unable to contain his anger, he struck the back of the Captain’s head and cursed.

“This bastard!! You’re eating!! But!! Why!! Aren’t you coming out!! And letting me!! Eat!!!”

As the intensity increased as he went on, the Captain couldn’t even scream and lost consciousness again.

“Not even!! Carrying!! Rations!!”

After venting, Wolfgang covered his face with his hands.

Thinking of steamed dumplings, he focused on his sense of smell, but he couldn’t smell anything.

“I’m so hungry…”

At that moment, when he was suffering from hunger, a blue flame was approaching from the distance.

It was a Ghost soldier who was driving out the other soldiers and returning.

“I hope he brought something.”

Wolfang sighed as he rose from his seat and looked at Ghost.

“Huh?”

His desperate wish had become a reality.

Ghost had brought a supply cart that the soldiers had abandoned.

Wolfang ran over and embraced Ghost’s head.

“Thank you! Ghost!”

As if proud, Ghost blew on Wolfang’s face.

Wolfang quickly bowed his head and dodged the wind, then ran towards the cart.

Various sized boxes were packed inside.

Wolfang tore off the seal of one and checked its contents.

“Wow… Right now, this is a grade 1 lemon cake.”

Inside were pound cakes known for tasting like cardboard but served as combat rations.

Normally, it would have been food that he wouldn’t even look at, but now it was top-tier sustenance that couldn’t be compared to anything mediocre.

Filled with genuine gratitude, Wolfang quickly emptied one box and was about to open the second one before changing his mind and putting it down.

Once his appetite was satisfied, his natural need for sleep started to increase.

Since the day he fought the final battle with the demon, he hadn’t had a proper sleep, so his body was filled with exhaustion.

As he looked at the inn that was more than half destroyed, he satisfied his regret with a mouthful.

“If that damn beast hadn’t blown it away, I could have slept comfortably in there for a change.”

Although the inn was close to being in ruins, it still seemed better than sleeping on the bare ground.

“I’ll sleep there today.”

Having made up his mind, Wolfang called Ghost to move the supplies.

“Ghost! Take this cart and go towards the inn over there.”

The ghost horse pretended not to hear his words and stood still.

“If you have something you want, speak up… Ouch!”

As Wolfang tried to grab Ghost’s collar to assert his authority, he twisted his back.

But then Ghost suddenly ran towards him and started pulling the cart towards the inn.

“What could it be… Is it really?”

As he filled his stomach and started heading back to the fallen Commander, the inn guests who had been watching suddenly crowded around and started tearing off his armor.

When they saw Wolfang approaching, they quickly grabbed their belongings and fled the scene.

“Don’t those bastards at least have the decency to thank me if I saved them?”

Wolfgang dragged the disarmed captain through the ruined inn, his feet bare.

The captain’s flesh was scraped and bruised everywhere on the rough floor and scattered stones.

Upon reaching the inn, Wolfgang gathered intact tables shielded from the explosion to create makeshift beds.

Then, after tying the unconscious captain’s hands and feet with iron chains, he found a sturdy rope, fashioned a noose, and placed it around the captain’s neck.

“Ugh… Even if he’s an enemy, isn’t this too cruel?”

Allen, listening to Yulia’s story, shivered.

“Ah~ Allen, considering what Wolfgang went through, this is nothing, you know?”

“Well… still…”

“Not only did he mercilessly kill comrades who fought alongside him, disguising himself in his own appearance, but he also led a rebellion, inflicting suffering even on the remaining families of the deceased,” Yulia protested with exaggerated gestures, seemingly agitated.

In response, Allen lowered his tail, which he hadn’t even raised.

“…Yes. Hahaha, you’re right. For such a despicable guy, this punishment seems inadequate…”

“That’s right! Allen! Let’s go even further when we capture Hagnes!”

Allen nodded with an exaggerated smile.

‘Terrifying…’

“Let’s kill the saint! The saint is our enemy!!”

While agreeing with those words, Allen tried to calm Yulia down as he wanted to hear the rest of the story quickly.

“Yes! That’s right. Let’s kill her!… Yes… Wow! ………… Miss, what happened next?”

Yulia, who had been passionately speaking, laughed as if to say, ‘When did it become like this?’

“Oh! What happened next was…”

… Having tied up the captain, Wolfgang lay down on the makeshift bed and fell asleep.

The next morning, the captain woke up earlier than anyone else.

He reflexively jerked, scanning his surroundings.

It was a space surrounded by debris like walls and roofs.

‘Am I… still alive?’

After a night of violence, it was difficult even for him to gauge his own life.

Lowering his head, he checked the iron chains binding his hands and feet and then realized that he was alive.

As he slightly moved, intense pain spread throughout his body.

He tightly sealed his lips and whimpered very softly.

It was because Wolfgang, still asleep in front of him, was there.

“I can endure this much…”

He tried to escape from here first and return to Tessa.

Enduring the pain caused by the shattered joints, activated by supernatural strength, he slowly rose to his feet.

A noose made of rope was loosely wound around his neck.

He tried to slowly remove it from his neck.

Chin.

With a sound of something falling, the noose around his neck suddenly tightened.

Caught in the noose, he hung from the ceiling, attached to the bodyguard captain.

“K-Keuk…”

A phantom horse with a blue flame, a piece of wood on its head, bit the rope in its mouth and pulled it forcefully.

Wolfgang had designed it in advance so that when the bodyguard captain moved, the piece of wood would fall on top of Ghost’s head.

Then Ghost was supposed to perform the planned play.

Wolfgang, pleased to see the bodyguard captain hanging from the ceiling, stretched and yawned.

The leg floating in the air thrashed back and forth.

Wolfgang stood up and approached, grabbing the leg as if hugging it.

At that moment, the pain from the already shattered leg was felt, but the constricted throat felt relieved as if it would die soon.

The bodyguard captain, exhaling rough breaths, earnestly pleaded with Wolfgang.

“Please… let me go…”

Wolfgang looked at the face of the bodyguard captain with an expression that seemed to have no intention of doing so.

“Don’t worry. I will definitely send you back to the queen.”
