The Rise of the Writers of the Republic of China

Chapter 57 057【Entering Beijing】

Since its serialization, "The Rise of Great Powers" has been highly praised by intellectuals in the Republic of China because of its systematic, comprehensive and logical writing. Although many of these views are quite controversial, they are generally recognized, and Zhou Hexuan is also known as "the authority of world history research".

This authority is recognized by everyone, and it is not brainless touting.

Throughout the development of Western historiography research, it has gone through four stages:

First, classical historiography.

Second, medieval historiography.

Third, Renaissance historiography.

Fourth, modern historiography.

Modern historiography emerged from the First World War, and scholars began to include factors such as economy, society, culture, and the masses of the people into the scope of historical research. Prior to this, the object of historical research has always been the upper rulers and elite figures, as well as their behavior and activities.

In other words, it has only been ten years since the birth of modern historiography. Even Western historians are still gradually exploring at this time, and modern historiographical theory has not yet been fully developed.

And Chinese historical research is even more backward.

It was not until the late Qing Dynasty that under the influence of Japanese scholars, Liang Qichao took the lead in putting forward new historiography ideas in China. This so-called "new historiography" is actually the "Renaissance historiography" in the West, which advocates the study of history from the perspective of development, progress, rationality and science.

About four years ago, Liang Qichao published the "Chinese History Research Method", and the Chinese historiography circle finally entered the stage of "modern historiography".

That is to say, modern historiography was born in the West less than 10 years ago, and only 4 years ago in China. And "The Rise of Great Powers"'s exposition of the history of various countries is all based on the analysis of modern historiography, how can it not be amazing?

Far away in Western Europe, when the articles of "The Rise of Great Powers" spread to the past, the scholars there felt like a treasure, which caused a sensation in the European historian circle. However, due to distance and communication reasons, the Chinese academic circle is not aware of this matter, otherwise Zhou Hexuan's reputation will be terrifying.

Lucien Favere, a famous French historian and founder of the Annals School (which has not yet been established), said to the students in a lecture last month: "You should read "The Rise of Great Powers", which is the history of world history. It is a classic work of research, and those who study history must not miss it."

Arnold Joseph Toynbee, a famous British scholar and later known as "the greatest historian in modern times", also wrote in the first volume of his masterpiece "Historical Studies": "The Rise of Great Powers gave me A lot of inspiration, it is hard to believe that it came from a Chinese scholar, and I am deeply fascinated by its historical discussion of technology and culture."

Whether it is Favere in France or Toynbee in Britain, they are all scholars who have made outstanding contributions to the development of modern historiography. But although they were very famous at this time, their respective classics had not yet been born. It is conceivable that modern historical research is still far behind.

Zhou Hexuan's "The Rise of Great Powers" is one of the foundational works of "modern historiography" even if it is placed in the world.

Especially in major universities in China, students have regarded this series of articles as an important window to understand the world.

Because of this, there are so many publishing houses coming to the door, hoping to publish and distribute this book. In addition to Beixin Bookstore and Commercial Press, there are also New China Press, Kaiming Bookstore, Yadong Library, Jinghua Bookstore, Modern Bookstore, etc. Many publishing houses have sent people to contact them one after another.

Even Lili Bookstore, which publishes popular books, wants to build a relationship (published "The Legend of the Condor Heroes"), and hopes that Zhou Hexuan can entrust the publishing of "The Rise of Great Powers" to them.

Zhou Hexuan was not in a hurry, and it took a whole week before he finally reached an agreement with the Commercial Press: "The Rise of Great Powers" will be published by the Commercial Press, with 40% royalties and a 20-year copyright period, excluding overseas copyrights.

...

In the blink of an eye, it was July, and the students were already on vacation. Many teachers from Peiping went south, including Mr. Lu Xun. They couldn't stand Zhang Zuolin's culturally oppressive rule, so they chose to defect to the more enlightened southern government after the semester ended.

That's right, today's National Party is still a progressive group, and is widely endorsed by scholars and intellectuals.

On July 4, the Nationalist Party issued a declaration of the National Revolutionary Army's Northern Expedition, and immediately conquered Zhuzhou, Changsha and other places. The war was in a hurry, but a large number of Wu Peifu's troops were dragged to the north by Feng Yuxiang. It was really uncomfortable and uncomfortable.

Feng Yuxiang was still very powerful, and he fought against the Feng, Zhi, Jin, and Lu coalition forces all by himself, and fought with vibrancy. Historically, he held back the Beiyang Allied Forces for three full months and created favorable conditions for the Southern Revolutionary Army, which led to the successive victories in the early days of the Northern Expedition.

But none of this has anything to do with Zhou Hexuan, his main focus is on newspapers and foundations.

The China Hope Education Foundation has completed preparations. In addition to a president and three vice presidents, a committee and a secretariat have also been established.

The committee is composed of wealthy businessmen with the largest donations, famous scholars, and officials from the Ministry of Education, and is responsible for the coordination, supervision and publicity of the foundation. Most of the members of the secretariat are members of Zhang Xueliang, especially the executive secretary-general, who is responsible for the daily management of the foundation, and Zhang Xueliang's English secretary Ji Chengdong is in charge of it full-time.

In late July, the serialization of "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" was coming to an end, and the publishing affairs were still entrusted to Lili Bookstore as an agent. The first batch of 30 Hope Primary Schools in the Zhili area has also been selected, but the personnel arrangements such as principals and teachers are still being established.

Zhou Hexuan was finally able to get out and go to Peiping. On this trip, he was going to visit two people, one was the Minister of Education Ren Kecheng, and the other was the famous scholar Liang Qichao.

There is a railway from Tianjin to Beiping, called Jinlu Railway, which connects Tianjin to Lugou Bridge.

Since the late Qing Dynasty, this railway has left many legends. At the beginning, Yuan Shikai often went to Beijing to see Cixi, and he had to go back to work in Tianjin after work, so he had to walk on this railway every now and then. In the Republic of China, the Beiyang warlords who took power also took this railway to escape to the Tianjin Concession as an apartment after losing their power.

On this line of trains, you can meet celebrities anytime, anywhere.

Zhou Hexuan met one during this trip. He took the Sun family brothers in an ordinary car, and just after placing his luggage, a young man in his 30s came over.

This person is tall and thin, wears glasses, and looks like a scholar. There are four big boxes of his belongings, and he doesn't know how they got into the car, and he is dragging them here one by one at the moment.

"Yongzhen, Yonghao, hurry up and help!" Zhou Hexuan ordered.

"okay!"

The Sun brothers can't do anything else, but they are good at working hard. Immediately rushed over, one person dragged two boxes and left, and put the boxes on the cargo rack by the way.

"Thank you for your help," the young man clasped his fists and said, "I am in Xialiang, named Shouming."
