89 – EP5. Memories of the Wind

Darkness seeped into the sky. Moonlight illuminated the earth, revealing the extinguished campfire at the campsite.

Lena and Angel began to move.

“Where could he be?”

Lena spoke quietly.

“I don’t know.”

They were currently in a state of invisibility, but they couldn’t be entirely at ease. There were undoubtedly soldiers on nighttime patrol, and the fairies were sensitive to any disturbances. Merely being invisible wouldn’t be enough to pierce through Ricardo’s camp without a care.

“For now, let’s assume the central area of the camp.”

“Yeah… that’s a reasonable assumption.”

Lena expanded her senses, but Ricardo’s magical presence was nowhere to be found.

“Hmm… I can’t sense Ricardo’s magic in the central area.”

Angel began to ponder upon hearing this.

Ricardo’s personality was undeniably rational and logical. However, sometimes he displayed emotion. For instance, he refrained from killing himself, even when it seemed more practical to do so. He also said things like, “I plan to subdue my father rather than kill him.”

If that was the case… based on his personality, he was likely to be in a place with personal significance to him.

That wasn’t the only basis. Ricardo never liked to be at the forefront. He always observed everything from one step behind, rather than actively participating with his subordinates.

Angel grabbed Lena’s hand.

“Wait a moment. I have a feeling.”

There were two places that could be meaningful to Ricardo. One was the royal palace, and the other was where the World Tree used to be.

Among them, the palace was the camp of Lena and the kingdom’s army…

There was only one place left.

“…Ah, so it’s you.”

Ricardo smiled and spoke.

Gently, and somewhat sadly.

“So… you’ve come to kill me? It must be a struggle, I suppose.”

Ricardo said.

“I couldn’t sleep for a while, so I was walking around here, only to run into my little sister.”

The place where Ricardo was standing was right above the spot where the World Tree used to be.

On the scorched and eerie ground, he stood, baring his sinister flesh.

Lena shot an arrow towards him.

“Hmm… is it because the bow I used to use is gone? It’s a little lacking.”

Ricardo blocked it with his sword.

“I am also currently in a position without a bow… but it should be enough with just this sword.”

Lena’s face twisted and she started running towards him.

Lena drew her sword.

Clang! The sound of cold metal blades clashing resounded.

“You’ve lost your composure, little sister.”

“Shut up!”

Lena continued to swing he

And in that moment, with a thunderous roar, Ricardo’s body was pierced by flames.

“Hey.”

It was Ivercas.

Ricardo looked at him with wide eyes, surprised.

“I thought of you like my nephew. But of all people, you had to kill your own father. Sadly, it is.”

Ricardo, on the verge of tears, smiled.

“I didn’t want this either. But… I have to kill you.”

With a faint smile and tears streaming down, Ricardo mumbled something that would have been his last words before death, but it was inaudible.

The flames enveloped Ricardo, and he died just like that.

Angel entered his mansion.

There was a book laid out.

Angel opened the book.

It contained Ricardo’s diary up to the point of his rebellion.

And after the rebellion, on the day Lena’s father died, Ricardo’s diary was cut off.

The last page, with the words “I’m sorry” and visible tear stains, marked the end.

Angel examined it thoroughly.

“What are you doing?”

Lena asked with trembling legs.

Angel showed her the book.

Lena frowned deeply.

“…I don’t want to see it. Get rid of it.”

Angel burned the mansion, the book, and even Ricardo’s remaining corpse all at once.

“Wait, there are soldiers coming this way!”

Lena said as the flames subsided.

Angel, still holding the shaken Lena in his arms, looked at her.

“…Can you run?”

“…No.”

As Lena spoke, Angel hugged her without hesitation.

And then, he started running.

It didn’t take long for pursuit forces to catch up to them.

“What, what is it? How did this happen? I was certain I would be in chaos.”

Angel gritted his teeth at Lena’s words. In fact, he had thought this could happen.

Ricardo had said something in the past. Even if it wasn’t himself, this situation would have occurred. The dissatisfaction of the fairies had reached its peak, and there was no fundamental solution unless it was resolved.

If that’s the case… the possibility that Ricardo’s death would drive him even more insane was already anticipated. However, Angel couldn’t say it. Because even if he did, it wouldn’t create a fundamental solution. His strong desire to kill Lena’s Ricardo prevented him from speaking.

“En!”

While holding Lena, Angel called out to Ann and blocked the pursuers. However, he couldn’t guarantee how long he could endure.

The pursuers increased more and more, and the attacks flying toward them became even more abundant.

“… damn it.”

After cursing, Angel continued to run.

Snap, an arrow flew towards them.

That arrow pierced his back. It was an arrow that Ann couldn’t block in time.

Angel almost fell, but he managed to withstand it. The arrow’s speed had slowed down somewhat because of Ann’s defense, so he was able to avoid instant death.

Then another arrow pierced his back.

“Ugh!”

Blood trickled from Angel’s lips.

“Well, well! Wait a moment! I’ll get down. Quickly…”

“What are you getting down for?”

Angel said firmly.

“What? Isn’t it better to go with someone who got shot by arrows than…”

“You’re talking nonsense. Instead of summoning Eberkas and exhausting my magic to the point where I can’t even run, just pull out the arrow.”

“What?”

“I said, pull out the arrow!”

As Angel shouted, Lena hurriedly pulled out the arrow.

Angel healed the spot where the arrow hit with divine power.

Angel continued to run, but suddenly he turned his head. An arrow grazed his cheek.

He healed the grazed wound with divine power.

Then, the pursuers swung their swords at him.

Angel bit down on the blade with his mouth to block it. The blade tore his lips and blood dripped, but the person who swung the sword was burnt by Ann, and Angel spat out the sword and restored his lips with divine power.

Then, arrows came flying again. Although Ann tried to slow down the speed as much as possible, the arrows ultimately hit his eyes. The slower speed prevented them from hitting his brain.

“Hee, heeick!”

When Lena screamed, Angel spoke firmly.

“Pull out the arrow.”

Lena pulled out the arrow.

The shattered eyeball came out with it.

“Put it in my mouth.”

“What?”

“Put it in my mouth.”

Trembling, Lena brought the shattered eyeball to him. Angel put his own eye in his mouth, chewed, and swallowed.

Chew, chew. The sound of chewing echoed. The trackers, Lena, all looked at him with shocked eyes.

With superhuman determination, he just kept running.

How much time passed?

Angel’s body was torn to shreds. Covered in all sorts of wounds, yet he still held Lena and ran.

Meanwhile, Lena’s body had only a few shallow cuts. It was because Angel took the wounds for her as they ran.

And then, they drew near to their allies.

The allies rushed towards them, recognizing and protecting them. Only then did Angel finally let go of Lena.

Lena and Angel walked towards their allies. Angel, too, was at his limit. He seemed about to collapse at any moment.

And Angel looked back.

The commander of the guards was there. He didn’t know why he was there. He just suddenly appeared.

The bow he was holding was noticeable.

The arrow aimed at Lena was noticeable.

Angel’s body left behind unconscious, instinctual movements, without thinking.

Angel hugged Lena tightly, taking the arrow in her place.

The arrow pierced Angel’s body.

The commander of the guards was a high expert. A high expert could shoot a bending arrow.

Knowing that, Angel knew that whether he pulled Lena away or not, he would still be hit.

So, he moved instinctively.

The result was this.

“Cou…gasp….”

Angel held Lena, blood gushing from his mouth.

“Kya, ahh!”

“Sorry.”

Lena realized what Angel had done and let out a scream. Then, she began to sob.

He dies. The consequence was vividly etched in her eyes.

“I’m sorry… for insisting and forcing my way in…”

At the same time, regret filled her chest.

Angel looked at her, tears streaming down her face, then looked around. Suddenly, their fellow soldiers were surrounding them.

It’s okay. Lena was no longer in danger of dying.

“No. It’s not your fault.”

Angel felt relief from the fact that Lena didn’t die. He placed his hand on her head. Then, his hand made a faint movement, probably an attempt to stroke her hair.

His hand, stained with blood, dirtied her hair, but she held onto him without hesitation.

“I’m sorry… for trying to kill you… for forcing you to follow me like this…”

Angel held her tightly and smiled.

“No… It’s all my fault.”

“What do you mean?”

Angel spoke.

“I knew it would end up like this. I knew you would suffer if you chose this path. But even though I knew, I thought there was no other way and chose this path. I didn’t want to see you in so much pain.”

“No… I, I…”

Sniff, blood flowed from Angel’s mouth again.

“My father died, my brother died… I’m sorry. I caused all of this. I’m really sorry. I couldn’t save you…”

Lena realized Angel’s condition and continued to shed tears.

His life was fading away.

“I will definitely… definitely solve this. So that you don’t have to go through something painful like this again…”

Angel spoke with great effort.

“No! Don’t say that… You can still live…”

“…No, I have to die.”

“Don’t say that!”

“No… I have to die. Now, by dying… so that next time…”

He couldn’t continue speaking.

Angel took his last breath, still holding Lena in his arms.
