My Deep-sea Fishery

Chapter 706: Elephant Seal

Gao Chuang did not know how many times he had been to Antarctica in his life.

It is common for Gao Chuang to block roads with heavy snow, as long as there is no snowstorm, Gao Chuang doesn't care.

"The two icebreakers we opened the way in front of us are not just decorations. We spent so much money to get two icebreakers, aren't they just for use when the road is blocked by heavy snow?" Gao Chuang said with a smile.

"Oh, so the icebreaker is used in this way." Xia Pengjie said thoughtfully.

Xiang Yang looked around for a while, "Don't worry, the sea water in this sea area is not shallow, and the snow melts immediately when it hits the water surface. It is basically impossible to cause the sea surface to freeze, let alone we still have icebreakers."

Hearing Xiang Yang and Gao Chuang's comforting words, everyone immediately let go of their worries. The two big bosses don't care. What are they afraid of?

At this moment, Chen Qingsheng exclaimed suddenly: "Look at the sea, there is another seal, hey, what kind of seal is this, I have never seen it before."

Hearing this, Xiang Yang followed Chen Qingsheng's line of sight and looked into the sea.

Sure enough, in the sea water, there was a strange seal with a huge body and a huge nose.

At first, Xiang Yang felt that Chen Qingsheng was making a fuss. There are only four kinds of exclusive seals in the entire Antarctic. Not knowing them can only show that Chen Qingsheng has little knowledge.

As a result, after seeing the seal, Xiang Yang was taken aback for a moment, "Is this an elephant seal?"

"I'm going. It's really an elephant seal. How did this thing get to the Antarctic?"

Elephant seals are mammals.

The big ones are the male elephant seals, which can grow up to six meters in length and weigh several tons. They are the king of beasts among the pinnipeds.

Elephant seals are still very easy to distinguish. The origin of the elephant seal's name is that it has a retractable proboscis, which is also the origin of its name.

Elephant seals are slow, unresponsive animals.

Someone once walked gently beside the elephant seal, but the elephant seal was unconscious and continued to sleep on the beach, as if it was the only one on the beach, calmly and without any worries.

But one thing must be noted, when watching an elephant seal, don't go around behind it, because the elephant seal is most afraid that others will cut off its retreat to the sea.

The elephant seal will be furious at anyone who cuts off its retreat, letting out one rough roar after another.

The movement of elephant seals is difficult.

This is because its front legs are too short to support its heavy body.

When Xianghaibin moves on the shore, he must put his whole body weight on his belly to support his body, and then rely on his two underdeveloped forelimbs to move forward with great difficulty.

On some beaches, dozens or hundreds of elephant seals often lie in groups and sleep lazily on the beach.

When elephant seals lie down, they look like piles of dark brown rocks.

The elephant seal that Xiang Yang sees now has a round and big head, and a pair of protruding eyes like glass balls set on the Guanghua broad face.

There are four thick and hard hairs stuck upside down above the eyes of this elephant seal, which looks very ugly. If someone with obsessive-compulsive disorder sees it, it will be very uncomfortable.

In fact, it was the ugly pale brows of an elephant seal.

Xiang Yang doesn't like elephant seals very much.

Because Xiang Yang always believes that elephant seals are a more disgusting type of seal than Weidel seals.

The broad nostrils of elephant seals are always filled with dirty and greasy white secretions, and a few beards are adorned on the fat cheeks.

Whenever the elephant seal is excited or angry, its nostrils will be widened, the muscles of the whole body will be tense, and the whole expression of joy, anger, sorrow and joy is so prominent and obvious.

What makes Xiang Yang feel strange is why this elephant seal appears here.

Elephant seals live in groups.

At the end of winter, they come to the Valdes peninsula to meet. Male elephant seals are always the first to lead the way and come to the meeting place.

Two weeks after the male elephant seals arrived, the female elephant seals also landed one after another to seek mates.

Newborn baby elephant seals will be covered with a layer of curly black lanugo, short and soft, like a shiny satin.

Baby elephant seals need to lie in their mother's arms and make sounds like a puppy barking from time to time. When they sleep, their posture is like that of a baby, with their backs facing the sky, leisurely and contented.

Xiang Yang knows that there are two kinds of elephant seals.

One is the northern elephant seal, the male's nose is as long as an elephant, and it is distributed in warm and cold South America.

The second is the southern elephant seal.

The skin of this male elephant seal grows into a sac-like structure on the upper part of its snout.

The one Xiang Yang sees now is a southern elephant seal.

The body length of male elephant seals is generally close to 6.5m, the general weight is 1500-3500kg, and the heaviest is 3692kg.

The southern elephant seal has a peculiar shape and a retractable nose. When it is excited or angry, the nose will inflate and can make a loud sound, hence the name "elephant seal".

Because they are around the Antarctic, their full name is called "Southern Elephant Seal".

Southern elephant seals are not only ugly in appearance, but also have a gray-blue body color, which gives people a sense of "dirty".

Groups of elephant seals will huddle in the mud puddles on the bank where lichen plants grow, making their bodies dirty and covered in mud. But don't look at its huge and fat body, but it is very soft. The head can be bent more than 90 degrees in the direction of the back and tail.

There used to be a lot of this kind of seal, but because of its large body and rich fat, it was hunted and killed in large numbers. Now the number of surviving seals is pitifully small.

Southern elephant seals were once distributed around many islands in the south of the three oceans including the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean, and around many islands near the Antarctic. They also once reached the northernmost Juan-Fernandez Islands in Chile. It is now only distributed in the oceanic islands surrounding Antarctica and the shores of the Antarctic continent.

Northern elephant seals, both adults and juveniles, are hairless and black before moulting.

After peeling, it is generally silvery to dark gray and gradually turns yellowish brown. Adult males are hairless on the neck and have pink, white, and light tan spots on the chest.

The black eyes of northern elephant seals are large and round, and the width of the eyes indicates that they mainly hunt by sight.

Like other seals, the northern elephant seal's shrunken hind limbs are part of the tail and caudal fin. Each foot has five webbed toes. These flexible feet can be used to push water. The pectoral fins are rarely used for swimming.

The hind limbs of elephant seals are not suitable for movement on land, and northern elephant seals use flippers to support and propel their bodies. They are able to travel very quickly over short distances, reaching speeds of up to 8 kilometers per hour, which is very rare among mammals.
