9 – Entrance-9

“So… you managed it.”

Though it was far from full strength, Claire had undeniably conjured a shadow arrow.

“It’s all thanks to you! You can do it, too!”

Claire celebrated, hopping around the room. Almost as if boasting of her accomplishment, she shouted at me in a delighted voice.

“We have to give our best until the joint class!”

“Yeah… right.”

Now that there was some progress, I couldn’t tell her to give up on black magic outright.

But, it was strange. As far as I knew, she should have had to abandon black magic as she wasn’t even able to use the simplest magic in her life.

I am not sure what changed, but I couldn’t accept it with joy.

But still, I couldn’t reprimand her right away. As Claire said, the joint class was no light event.

“Is Wade well-prepared?”

“Somewhat.”

The joint class was designed for different classes of students in twos, bringing together knights and magicians, priests, and black magicians. Naturally, high expectations were set for them.

A leader must be able to gather a party and use their abilities at the right time. The students must be able to follow the leader’s command in extreme situations and demonstrate their professional abilities in fulfilling their tasks efficiently.

Of course, the class was intended for students, and the targets weren’t too challenging.

They were all fresh students who had just entered the academy. Unreasonable mistakes could happen and, even if they did, there should not be any harm or death.

However, it was everyone’s responsibility to enhance their own abilities until then.

“I hope we get into the same team!”

“…”

But I knew it. She wasn’t the type to be chosen.

Even for me, letting a black magician into the party was a huge decision.

The views were not good. Considering the looks that black magicians receive, it was hard to label it as unwarranted discrimination.

Ordinary people hardly ever encounter black magic unless they are involved in military affairs, or they themselves, or their family members, are black magicians.

What they know about black magicians are villains who sold their souls for power, or potential criminals who need to be monitored.

To decrease this, the class had to proceed as quickly as possible…

Hatred can be diluted with cooperation.

Even hatred for other countries, or for black magicians, can lessen. It can be reduced and should be, as that was the purpose of setting up the academy.

“But why… this understanding and exchange of foreign cultures class. Do you know why it’s delayed? Considering the timetable, the lesson should have started already.”

“…”

She didn’t seem to have too many friends either. The teachers didn’t give any explicit information, but the reason had already widely spread among the students.

I was no different from her, omitting the fact that I could utilize the information within the game.

“But isn’t it time for class to begin? Why is there nobody here-“

Without any effort to hide their accumulated magic, countless people strolled into the lecture hall.

A cold magic force was enfolding the whole place.

“It’s Katarin…”

Claire murmured quietly.

When attending the black magic class, her arrogance was exceedingly natural. No one, who was present there, ever doubted her control and dominion.

From noble mtl dot com

No novice attending the class was a stronger black magician than Katarin.

Given the not-so-good lineage or background of other black magicians, probably no student was of a higher status than Katarin.

However, here it was different.

Several princesses of various kingdoms, imperial princesses were among them.

Though Katarin had made remarkable achievements in black magic, she couldn’t be considered overwhelmingly superior among all young nobles.

A collision was bound to happen if anyone capable and of high status resisted her rule.

“Pretty face, but totally crude behavior. She’s not a gangster, dragging those kids around in groups like that…”

A purple-haired magician laughed derisively at Katarin.

She was entitled. She might not have a ridiculously high status or strong influence, but she was the successor to the Tower Lord.

If everyone doesn’t agree, her restraint would eventually weaken.

Hmmm…

However, Katarin was Katarin. Ordinary students shied away from making eye contact with her.

Even the students following her were of fairly decent status among the noble youngsters.

“Is everyone here? We should start the class-“

In the midst of the buzzing noise, the door to the classroom opened again.

A beautiful blonde knight confidently opened the door and entered.

She wasn’t wearing armor but anyone looking at her would have known she was a knight.

Not in royal formal attire, but that didn’t diminish her nobility in the slightest.

Her untarnishable noble belief filled her eyes with a twinkling radiance.

“So, it has come to this after all.”

A princess and a knight, a woman with golden hair as stunning as gold itself walked into the classroom.

Euryshia of Armidron royal family. The most noble woman in the empire, or rather this world.

Even if Katarin’s Erst family holds a fairly high status, compared to the power of the empire’s royal family, it was merely a random noble family.

No one else entered alongside the princess, but it didn’t diminish her dignity.

There must have been no shortage of students in the academy who would do anything just to be with her.

Actually, the fact that no one was following her only proved that the princess maintained a perfect control over her followers.

“This is disgusting.”

She did not avert her gaze but glared directly at Katarin.

“Hey, was that rumor really true?”

A few ordinary students murmured, suppressing their voices.

“Not a single person gave me the proper explanation… as expected, if it’s not this, it wouldn’t make sense.”

Yurisia couldn’t stand evil. Widely, all those who wield the power of darkness, including black warlocks and narrowly, Katarin.

From her viewpoint, Katarin was the embodiment of pure evil. To compromise with evil was a shameful and pitiful thing.

“There was a rumor that she requested her lecturers not to have classes with those black warlocks… it was true.”

If it was an average person’s request, the academy lecturers would have disregarded her request, thinking how could such a tiring individual exist?

The academy’s utmost priority is unity, not justice.

Unless you are a terrible war criminal, or even if you are, the academy would still accept the applicant.

As long as the culpable applicant’s country defends them.

Katarin’s infamy had already spread far and wide. It was only getting held back by her cunning and the authority of the Ernst family.

Even ordinary farmers knew what they were doing to draw magic. The princess must have known.

Despite the clash, the academy lecturers ultimately succeeded in pushing their opinion. Anyway, both of them ended up attending the same class.

The princess who swiftly made her way to the classroom stopped in front of me.

“Ah, it’s you. Did you keep safe?”

…?

I didn’t know she remembered.

“I am safe. Thank you for your concern, Your Highness.”

She was the person who stepped forward to stop Katarin’s bullying.

“Did that treacherous woman try to harm you in any way?”

It’s warm. There is mercy embedded in her overflowing authority.

“Nothing of the sort happened.”

Strictly speaking, Katarin had the intention to retaliate, but nothing had come to fruition.

“I am glad. I haven’t seen you in class, so it seems you are not taking knight classes, are you learning magic by any chance?”

“No, I am studying black magic.”

This was very unfortunate.

Given my abilities, studying black magic was undeniably a wise choice. The power of light needs to be built honestly, it consumes an enormous amount of effort and time.

Even if I could somehow put in the effort, time cannot be stopped. My time at the academy is limited.

“Black magic…huh.”

Her expression slightly distorted.

A few days back, the innocent person she rescued turned out to be a black magic aspirant.

That’s unfortunate.

If I were a knight, I could have become the princess’s person with minimal effort.

Even if I were a regular magician or clergy, if I showed my skills, maybe I could join her party in the next joint class.

But, not a black magician.

“As long as you don’t tread the path of evil… That woman won’t be able to hurt you. I said so.”

The princess expressed regret and sighed.

“Upon hearing this, I am more worried. If you are a black magician, it would be difficult to defy a strong person’s command. In case some woman makes an unreasonable request or humiliates you-“

“How rude are you, Your Highness?”

Katarin was glaring at the princess and me.
