Life Isn’t Beautiful

Rachel D’Guin, a magic professor at the Jeriff Academy.

Her approach to Abrexus was entirely out of curiosity.

‘It was peculiar.’

An untrained body. Yet a lofty aspiration.

If, indeed, he had truly surpassed limits through talent alone, there would be no lack of calling him the most competent among the first-year students.

This was because, even among the many talented incoming students who could be counted on one hand, there were less than 50 people who could use aura enhancement.

Most students were still unaware of whether he could use aura enhancement.

‘So, I need to check.’

Just like before, he wasn’t going to suppress it all at once but instead slowly reveal his true abilities. If he had reached aura swell without even putting in any effort, he must have a natural talent for controlling aura.

In that case, even without training, he should be able to follow movement with just a little hint.

That’s why she challenged him to a duel.

Naturally, if he were an average student, he would not face a professor in a duel. He proposed to start the duel with restrictions and good rewards for himself.

But…

“It’s hard to decide because there was no precedent, right? So how about a duel with me?”

“Is this duel for real?”

He accepted the proposal right away, without even hearing the reward.

“No, junior! Didn’t that junior lose in just one hit last time? Isn’t it better to just give up?”

“I don’t care.”

Naturally, outside of common sense, the assistant tried to stop him. But he accepted the proposal as if it didn’t matter.

“So, the rules are the same, right? The duel lasts a total of five minutes. The person who inflicts more damage wins.”

“Right. So let’s give it a try.”

Once again, he confirmed the duel rules and sent his agreement to the assistant. All the while, he was smiling proudly.

As if he had some sort of plan.

‘Does he know his talent? Or did he hide the abilities I saw before?’

Even though she was wrapped in various questions, it didn’t matter at all. Everything would be revealed soon in the upcoming duel.

“Um, then the duel total is five minutes. The duel decides the victory by seeing who inflicts more damage within time, and if the damage is judged to be similar, it is recorded as a draw. Do you agree?”

“Yeah.”

“Of course.”

With that, they headed to their respective places. She observed his physique, still lean and untrained, and the pathetic looking wooden sword.

She wondered if what she saw was true.

Even before the duel started, she didn’t forget she was not sincere, afraid that he might not showcase his full strength out of fear.

“I’m going to go easy on you. I won’t knock you out, don’t worry.”

Then he showed a more intense reaction than when he had first applied for the duel.

“Is that true… no matter what happens, can you keep that promise?”

“Yep. I’ll definitely keep it.”

Of course, she couldn’t knock out a much weaker student in a match.

So, she gave the signal that she was ready to the assistant.

The nervous assistant prepared to start the duel.

“Alright. The duel starts. 3…2…1… Duel… Begin!”

At the start of the duel, she pulled out her magical aura and drove it into the magic circle.

She did this to see how to deal with it, as various magic started to be triggered.

While she was watching what Abraxas was preparing.

“Don’t move! If you move even a little from that position, my arm will be cut off!”

The words that sprang from Ablaxas’ lips were enough to disconcert her.

“What…?”

She couldn’t help but doubt the words that jumped from Ablaxas’ mouth. It was because he appeared confident that he thought he would be able to deal a significant blow to her using a creative method, by his own judgement.

‘Self-harm…is there any particular reason why I should not attack him, why is he doing that?’

Ablaxas, with his left hand on the hilt of his wooden sword, was targeting his own left hand.

But this was a mock battle situation.

Any injury incurred during a mock battle is not a big deal, it can be dealt with after the fight ends.

However, she could not go ahead and attack Ablaxas because of the words that followed.

“If you attempt to attack me or make a move, I will cut off one of my arms or legs. Naturally, if I’m grievously injured during the mock battle, it should be cancelled.”

“Then that’s my victory, isn’t it?”

Naturally, if someone’s seriously injured during the mock battle, it gets called off. And the person who got hurt badly is the loser.

However, a dispute erupted from his mouth.

From noble mtl dot com

“Did Professor Rachel inflict any harm upon me? If anything, the damage I’ve done is far greater, isn’t it?”

“Why can’t I attack?”

“As soon as I am harmed by Professor Rachel, my intention is to inflict greater damage upon myself. Eventually, I might end up fainting. Didn’t you say you wouldn’t make me faint? If you break a promise, it’s my victory isn’t it? Oh! If fainting due to self-harm is not recognized, I will just stay still until I faint due to excessive bleeding.”

Listening to his argument, it felt like Rachel had been smacked on the head.

If his words were true, she shouldn’t have attacked him under any circumstances.

Certainly, if we look at the situation based on mock battle rules, his tactics seem to have a better chance of winning over her.

But, she still had a lingering question.

“What would you have done if I didn’t say I wouldn’t make you faint?”

He seemed confident even before Rachel placed any restrictions on him, but it seemed hard to believe that he’d anticipated the restrictions.

However, he responded in a way that exceeded Rachel’s expectations.

“I would’ve threatened my own life by aiming for my neck.”

His outrageous strategy was to bet his life if there were no restrictions.

And when Rachel learned the truth of his stratagem, she felt her consciousness slipping away.

“What kind of…”

As she muttered to herself at his ridiculous display, her tension instantly dissolved—an instant of hesitation—

“I told you not to move!”

Whisper—

Simultaneously with his words, his right arm connected with his left arm.

His left arm was no longer able to function.

Rachel’s face was colored with horror as she confirmed his sincerity.

“You…”

“Just wait until the 5 minutes are up after dispelling the magic? That’ll be much easier. If you’re thinking about making me faint…”

After that, he just held the wooden sword hilt against his neck.

His left hand was just sagged, unable to exert any strength.

His right hand was also trembling.

Even in his appearance which looked weak, his gaze was the same as before.

‘If you’re not careful he really could stab you.’

Naturally, she had no intention of killing Abraxas. Regardless of his punishment as a professor, his misconduct was still insufficient compared to the real troublemakers.

The behaviours of the real delinquents are undoubtedly unpleasant, but Abraxas, at least from her perspective, hasn’t behaved similarly to them, besides being stubborn.

‘And most of these delinquents are all talk, unlike him who genuinely tried to stab himself. He would normally dislike hurting himself due to his nobility.’

Indeed, Abraxas was different from the others. Whether compared to a delinquent or a typical student.

Even from the perspective of nobility and civilian.

During all of this, Abraxas kindly explained the situation to her.

“If it comes to this, even if you knock me out with magic, the shockwave would stab my neck with this knife. And since you were the one who attacked, it will definitely become a problem later on.”

If she attacked, she would lose. As long as she didn’t take back the declaration that she would not make him pass out, she had no chance of winning.

After all, even if she attacked, he would counter with a larger one.

‘Clearly, it’s my defeat.’

Although he didn’t win against Rachel with his real abilities.

At least he beat Rachel using an innovative method.

She was not offended because he had thoroughly targeted her weakness just like in real combat.

“It’s your victory.”

Her succinct surrender declaration slipped off her lips.

Abraxas. The moment his victory was confirmed.

“hahahahaha.”

Abraxas grinned brightly, like the succinct woman he was.

Rachel simply observed his reaction.

“So, is there anything you want to ask for? If I can, I’ll grant it.”

Normally, she would have refused, but to reward him for dueling, Rachel suggested he express what he wants.

However, Abraxas seemed startled as if he hadn’t thought of that, and he was lost in thought again.

‘Actually, he doesn’t really want any reward from me. Then why did he duel with me in the first place?’

She had that suspicion but it didn’t really matter. Considering his actions so far, it seemed difficult to understand him. It is hard to predict geniuses, or rather, their actions.

“So, now that I won the duel, can I ask you to transfer me to the top class?”

“Can I request something else if you are willing to grant it?”

“Yes.”

And Abraxas, who seems to have thought of something, shouted with joy more than anyone else did.

“Then!! I’d!!! Like!!! To be!!! Expelled!!!”

Upon hearing his wish, Rachel’s astonishment hit the roof once again.

“Groan-“

In the top floor of the academy’s faculty-exclusive building, inside the Principal’s office.

The Principal of Jerip Academy, Sergei Darmore groaned.

‘He’s already causing trouble. Shoot- That wasn’t an ordinary bet’

Abraxas seemed serious about wanting to leave the academy, considering all kinds of incidents he caused.

It hasn’t even been a week since he was admitted, and he’s already involved in numerous incidents.

The quality of the incidents was less than other miscreants, but the frequency and intent behind the incidents were significantly worse.

Even though he wants to decide to remain due to his connection with Count Mentutitehotep and his personal resentment, his future is unpredictable.

“Should I see this situation as good or bad?”

However, the situation changed due to a letter that came flying in after Professor Rachel personally asked the dean for Abraxas’s expulsion.

The contents were ‘Do not let Abraxas Mentutitehotep leave his student status at the academy for some reason’.

Sergei had no choice but to remain silent because this ‘some reason’ was not explained even to the dean.

‘I don’t really know why this request came in, even though I wasn’t thinking of making him leave in the first place.’

What made the situation worse was not just the content of the letter, but who it was addressed to.

The letter, addressed not to Sergei, the dean of the academy, but to Sergei Darmore.

This meant not only that the dean of the academy should carry out the contents of this letter, but also meant Sergei Darmore as an individual should do so.

It also meant to hide the fact from Abraxas.

‘Do not let him leave the academy. This means to stop him from withdrawing as well.’

If the recipient of the letter promised political support, then the majority of political problems could be solved if there was a justification.

However, what kind of reason could he possibly come up with?

Sergei drew inspiration from the very figure of Abraxas.

‘He’s a madman. It doesn’t seem like an act, but even if it is, he will claim to be a madman on the surface.’

The way to deal with a madman is to be one yourself.

Although it’s not a preferred method, if you have no other choice, you have to roll around in a dung heap.

Sergei thought this with a gratifying smile.

‘Since it doesn’t matter politically now… I should respond eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth.’

If they could handle the contents of the letter, then political manipulation and public opinion could be negated.

Maybe this time he could cover up the mess about urging for expulsion.

While thinking of Abraxas, who had made wisecracks, Sergei summoned his secretary.

“Akane, I have something to convey to the student Abraxas.”

“What is it, Dean?”

“When I convey this matter, Abraxas will probably fight back. When he does that, you deliver it as follow.”

“Yes. What should I convey?”

“Tell him that I am the one who ultimately decides if he wants to drop out or get expelled, even though he defeated Professor Rachel.”

“Yes.”

“Say that it’s not possible with just Professor Rachel’s authority. If he wants to quit, he must bring me down.”

“Understood.”

The best way to deal with a madman is to be one yourself. Hence, Sergei decided to be a madman.

“So, that’s the information that needs to be conveyed. Abraxas freshman.”

“Is it alright to curse when this is our first meeting?”

A showdown with the principal.

That was the only way I could be expelled.
