Chapter 7. Ice is just as good as fire (7)

The car drove along the highway. There are clouds in the sky. In the land there are wastelands and roads. Silence with us in the car.

It feels like I’m back at my regular barbershop.

The barber in the neighborhood where I lived was a man who would only say ‘How should I cut it?’ And ‘It’s done.’ It wasn’t bigger or cheaper than other places, but the fact that it didn’t make unnecessary noise was enough to make me a regular.

But with this level of silence, it seems like even the taciturn barber would say a word.

All animals in the world cannot withstand more stress than necessary. It has to be resolved somehow. So Camilla next to her slightly shakes her legs, the magnificent woman in front takes a sip of her drink, and the man in the driver’s seat notices and nuzzles her nose a little, then she blows.

In the end, the woman who was sipping her drink lost her balance first.

“Handsome guy. I guess you’re used to situations like this?”

The magnificent woman glanced in my direction. Camilla took her word instead of me.

“I’m working hard in many ways.”

“I asked a handsome guy.”

This time, the man in the driver’s seat answered the woman’s question.

“Right, 4 o’clock.”

Instead of giving her scolding, the woman picked up her rifle. She just didn’t disengage her safety catch and she didn’t even reload. At 4 o’clock on the right, a motorcycle followed approximately 400 meters away.

The woman opened her glove box, took out her small hand mirror, and waved it out her window. Camilla’s eyes narrowed as she watched the motorcycle. Fortunately, the motorcycle moved away little by little.

“What happened just now?”

I asked the question long after everyone had put down their rifles.

“You came too close, which means I will shoot you if you get any closer.”

Maintain rifle range spacing. It seems to be a promise between people driving on the road.

At the point where the divided highways merge, a car ahead of us also had its mirrors flashing. The driver slowed down, and only after the car had shrunk to a small dot did he speed up again.

For some reason, I felt a little uncomfortable. Camilla seemed to do the same, as she cleared her throat and slightly twisted her body. But that was all.

Afterwards, a careful conversation took place. We didn’t really want to know, and we didn’t want to look into it either. More information than necessary was inconvenient for both parties.

We shared just enough information to allow this junk car to drive down the highway and arrive safely at its destination in the human protection zone.

I was much better at sharing only what was necessary than Camilla. Well, it would be difficult for anyone to have a conversation with a cloth pressed tightly to her breast like Camilla is doing right now.

Still, the scenery changed little by little. The number of abandoned and burned cars increased. Dilapidated containers, tattered tents, and sandbag camps with dried blood were visible.

As I passed the information sign, I saw an eerie warning sign. It had been spray painted onto an otherwise intact cover. ‘If you fail to comply with the inspection, you will be killed immediately.’ ‘The Hamptons is hell, go back.’ ‘Repent before the goddess of hunger.’

Soon, a toll booth appeared. There were more than 20 lanes. Soldiers with rifles were positioned everywhere. The driver entered the area with the least queue. The flag of the <14th National Military Police> Was fluttering.

The barrier went up, and the car moved slowly. The car stopped at the ‘Stop’ sign, and everyone got out at the ‘Turn off engine and get out’ signal. Leave the gun in the car and take your time with both arms raised.

“The driver opens the car doors, trunk, and bonnet, and the rest stands in front of the thermal imaging camera. Conduct.”

The soldiers did not search our bodies. This is the first checkpoint. This is a place that only asks whether you are a zombie or not based on body temperature. After passing here, you will reach the second checkpoint where specific identification is possible.

Camilla and the brokers said they had already made all the preparations. So, as long as you pass here, there will be no problem. Driver passed. A magnificent woman also passes. Next was Camilla.

“Wait.”

Like a professional, Camilla didn’t show off. She just obeyed, and she slowly backed away. The soldiers looking at the monitor were shaking their shoulders and smiling.

“Hey. Frog.”

“Me?”

Camilla’s voice was like that of a boy going through a period of transformation. She forcibly raised her vocal range, which was between thin and thick.

“I have bigger breasts than most women. I exercise a lot and live, but? I also spill a little bit of broth. It looks like it’s as hot as sous vide pork. Why are you wearing a knife again? Passed.”

It seems that Camilla was seen as a rainmaker due to her lack of exercise.

She stood in front, thinking she had zombie eyes.

“Wait.”

The magnificent woman complained.

“What is it again?”

The person who appeared to be a senior answered.

“The body temperature is high.”

“I guess I sucked.”

“To you?”

“Why. Do you suck too? Why don’t you spread the word here?”

“Because I am careful to only work while at work.”

While they were arguing, an officer with a mustache approached her. He had a pistol on his waist.

“What is it?”

“This friend’s temperature is high. She was just checking to see if she had been bitten.”

The officer looked at the monitor and then at me again.

“There. Step back and stand in front of the camera again.”

Instead of taking off her clothes, I obediently did as I was told. The officer stroked his mustache.

“37.7 Degrees? That’s ambiguous.”

I looked behind me. Cars were pushed back little by little. Everyone had annoyance written on their faces.

I think we should eliminate the option of shooting all the soldiers and driving backwards. Or, if I hit the guy standing in front of me with a grenade attached to his waist, he asked a question while making up a scenario.

“There. What’s your name?”

I used the pseudonym I had promised in advance.

“Caesar.”

“Everyone rides.”

I closed the trunk and got into the car. However, only one of the double blocking bars at the entrance was opened. The farther side did not open.

“What? You’re not opening it?”

“Turn on the emergency lights and move to the quarantine room on the left. All of you. If you do anything foolish, you will die there. And there, Toad, put down the knife in your arms. We will notify you inside, so don’t think about it. Next, move!”

The soldiers aimed their rifles at once. I picked up my rifle.

“Ah, those bastards are a f*cking plague again.”

In vain, the driver started the car. The woman drank all the wine. She let out only a long burp. The woman looked back at us.

“You guys, this isn’t your first time here, right?”

“Why but?”

“Normally, they go crazy here. Then my beloved husband and I shoot them dead with our own hands. You will be reported as zombies, and we will receive compensation and go back. But surprisingly, you are calm.”

Well, the dead man doesn’t say anything, and the person who shot him said, ‘I thought he was a zombie.’ It’s a very convenient excuse because you can just grab it and take it off.

“Really? You’re not shooting now?”

“There’s no reason for that. If it’s really infected, wouldn’t you have to throw away the whole car if the blood splatters? If you’re unlucky enough to get splashed on me, I’ll become a zombie too.”

“You mean it doesn’t matter if I don’t get the rest of the payment?”

Camilla warned from behind. The woman shrugged her shoulders.

“It won’t be a big deal. Just endure the strip search and get some blood drawn. You’re fine, right?”

“You’re calmer than I thought.”

The woman snorted at my question.

“It’s not our first time here. And Mr. Milan, leave the knife behind.”

Camilla took her knife from her arms and placed it on her sheet.

I followed the soldiers into the quarantine center. To put it mildly, it is no different from a quarantine cell. All there is in the four-person room are two benches. There wasn’t even a distinction between men and women.

The soldiers locked us up, but they never came close. They didn’t search us or tell us to give up everything we had.

They even hand-applied ‘biohazard’ tape to the handles, doors, and trunk of the car we drove in. There were quite a few cars left abandoned in the parking lot.

It’s body temperature.

37.7 Degrees. Normally, this would be considered a mild fever. But I have no body aches or headaches. It was hot and stuffy in the car, so I did sweat a little, but that was it. I just feel a little uncomfortable.

…Feeling unwell?

It’s strange. A sensation I’ve never felt before. It was like that. My stomach feels a little uncomfortable. My stomach feels a little bloated, as if I overate and my stomach is full of food.

My hunger has subsided.

I just thought it was because I was nervous. Or maybe it’s because I ate more stew than usual last night. However, no matter how much I cooked without adding Cybele food at all, I always felt hungry.

But now even that is not there. Food ‘doesn’t appeal.’

“This is the Hamptons, right?”

The driver answered my question.

“I guess so.”

“Human sanctuary.”

“That’s right.”

Beside me, Camilla let out a rough breath. I was also sweating quite a bit. The smell of canned saury spread stronger. He was a bit short in stature and was performing well in his role as an overweight man with a rotten smell.

But if you ask me to take off my clothes. Then…. All you have to do is kill everything and leave. Somehow, I’ll grab her gun, get out of here…

“Excuse me.”

A tall woman wearing a white gown and a gas mask approached, pushing a cart. Next to her, a soldier wearing a chemical, biological and radiological protection suit was pointing a rifle at us.

“You have to just sit there. If you don’t follow instructions, you will be shot. I don’t want to see that either. You don’t want to see it either, right? Let’s get it over with quickly. We have to check for infections, so take off your clothes one by one. Look at your body, take a blood test, and leave for a day. “You can go after your stay.”

I heard Camilla let out a deep breath. Write-huh. Write-huh. It looked like clouds would form. I quietly touched the back of Camilla’s hand.

“We’re busy people.”

The driver complained. The man in the gas mask gown nodded at her.

“Yes. Yes. So does the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.”

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency? I was surprised and looked at the woman’s gown. There really was a management bureau mark. Camilla, who was sitting next to her, stood up.

“…I’ll take it off first.”

The driver and the magnificent woman frowned at the same time. They probably thought of Camilla as a fat man with a terrible smell.

But if you take off her clothes now, her incredible body will be revealed. A body that can never be seen on a man.

Those doctors and soldiers from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency have nothing to do with it. The problem is those brokers. If they find out that the person they thought was a man was actually a woman, they will definitely be suspicious.

Then I too become dangerous.

I can’t help it. I wasn’t planning on using this much. I stepped forward, nudging Camilla behind her. He carefully took off her top and wriggled her muscles.

“By any chance, you don’t remember me?”

Everyone froze at my every word. Even the soldier aiming the rifle blinked behind his mask. However, the woman wearing the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency gown is perplexed.

“I don’t know. Who is it, you?”

Before taking off her bottoms, I looked closely at the woman’s gas mask. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can see that person’s face. It was important to give the impression that we were simply observing closely.

“I’m sorry. I was mistaken. I thought you were the person I was introduced to when I was dating Cassandra last time.”

Camilla’s eyes seem to be slightly bloodshot. The brokers look on strangely.

But what is important is the reaction of the people at the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.

“…Cassandra?”

“Yes. That woman who calls herself in the third person.”

“I know. She’s a girl from the next department. I’m sure she doesn’t know anyone at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, right? And you’re her boyfriend?”

Camilla’s eyes appeared bloodshot. The brokers looked at me and the doctor in turns to understand what was going on.

“Well, it’s still a bit hard to say that…I guess I can say this after one hot date.”

Feeling a little embarrassed, I caressed her neck with my hand.

“Are you close with Cassandra? Oh, look at me. I need to take this off, right?”

You only get one chance.

I have to show that woman my ‘beauty’ and ‘manliness’. To the point where I think of my ‘beauty’ every time I encounter Cassandra or hear her name.

Look. My fascination.

He raises his chin arrogantly, places one hand on his waist, and holds the hem of his pants with the other. Just move your thumb slightly to button the top of your pants…

“Hey. Now, wait a minute! You really know Cassandra?”

The woman felt quite burdened and threw up her hand.

“I think I said it before, but wouldn’t it be more accurate to say ‘getting to know’ rather than ‘knowing’? hahahahaha.”

Now turn her waist slightly and tap her to get a better view of what is between her legs…

“I’ll make a phone call!”

It’s a waste. I couldn’t even show ‘half’ of my sincerity.
