Chapter 6. The price of a name (6)

I turned on the engine and turned on the radio. I gently adjusted the frequency until my voice came out clearly. A broadcasting station recited the news in a mechanical voice.

Now let’s turn a little more here. A clear voice and a simmering noise mix half and half.

If there is only noise, they try to ignore it, but when an intelligible voice is mixed in between, the irritation doubles. That’s the person It doesn’t seem that zombies, which are made from human beings, will be very different.

So I turned the volume up to maximum here. Inside the van with the doors wide open, the sound is amplified and radiates far and wide.

Disengaged the gear, put a stone on the accelerator, and fixed the steering wheel with a rod. The van moved forward slowly. It seems to be a little slower than expected, so I put another heavy stone on it. The speedometer needle is gradually tilting.

The van moves forward, bobbing up and down, dancing. The chains connected to the corpse cart slid, but fortunately the cart did not tip over.

I checked to see if the zombies were following me well from behind, and climbed up the cliff next to me. There is a horseshoe-shaped rock at the top, making it a good place to hide and observe.

A reflection of light flashed from the guard posts at both ends of the resort. Again, there are shooters. Scary to aim, blood splatters on his head and he collapses.

Taang, the sound of gunfire spreads like an echo. It was Camilla’s shot.

A silencer does not necessarily reduce the launch sound. There are also objects, like Camilla’s, that spread the sound of firing and make it difficult to locate.

It also worked to some extent against zombies. As the gunfire spread, there were also a significant number of objects that stopped.

But soon, I focused on the van, which danced and made a nerve-wracking roar.

A loud alarm sound was heard from inside the resort. But it was too late. Thud. A crash was heard. The van crashed into a wall.

Something flashed. She plugged her ears and bowed her head.

There was an explosion.

“Ugh… “

Even though I covered my ears, moaning flowed out.

I couldn’t come to my senses at the sound of tinnitus beeping. Patter, thump! The van and the wreckage of the collapsed wall were scattered all over the place.

– WARNING! Warning! Evacuate urgently! Warning! Warning! Fire, fire!

A loud beep sounded from the resort. Perhaps that is the siren that signals an emergency. The excitement of the zombies is transmitted all the way up here.

Bang!

To make matters worse, one of the stupid gang members accidentally opened fire. It doesn’t even fit the shape. Zombies shake their limbs and run into the collapsed wall.

Somehow I thought the gang member was a Dutch boy. The boy who discovered that the dam had cracked and blocked it with his fingers all night for fear of it collapsing.

The old boy threw down his gun and ran back. I watched carefully to see where he was running away. He seemed to run away to the main building, the largest and most spacious.

‘… There are more zombies than I thought.’

Fire and black smoke billowed from the blown-up van. The fire didn’t spread, but the sound of gunfire coming from the resort is attracting all the surrounding zombies.

Now not only people but also animals have gathered.

A pack of stray dogs, which I had seen before, gasped and unknowingly bit a human zombie that was injured while touching fire. Zombie humans and zombie dogs tried to bite and eat each other.

There is no sign of vehicles moving inside the resort. It seemed to form a defensive line from within. Zombies move, flames rise from somewhere, and buildings are torn apart.

They gradually turned into familiar shapes.

It is just as I remember the rundown resort. Everything from the forcibly removed front door being pushed all the way to the parking lot, to the collapse of the outer wall as fragments of the wall are embedded in the wall of the building.

I feel even a trivial sense of satisfaction.

Like pushing a water cup that slipped out of the corner of the desk to a safe place.

As if I saw the wind blowing my hair, wondering if it would stick to a stranger’s back and fall off.

Since the positions of volumes 4 and 5 of the series, which are arranged well from volume 1 to 10, have been changed, it is as much as when I had to remove them and put them in order.

That’s right. This is the resort I remember. Comfort is as unfamiliar as falling asleep on the shoulder of an unknown person.

What is this feeling?

At the far end, a black dot is seen climbing the resort fence. It’s Camilla. Suddenly, she climbed over the fence.

She’ll do her own thing, she told me to do mine. I’m thinking of doing it even if you don’t say so. If you wait here, pick out the good ones and take them…

But I keep thinking about the story we shared yesterday.

Like I’m missing something.

* * * * *

I asked Camilla in the warehouse yesterday. She asked why, knowing she was dangerous, she tried to find and enter a slave whose existence was unknown.

Camilla’s answer was, ‘It is unacceptable for an Elsa person to enslave another Elsa person.’

“The truth is the truth, so I’ll just tell you. Römer rules us now, but in the past Minsk, a western country, ruled us. As you well know…… “

“Camilla. Just assume I know nothing and tell me.”

Camilla hesitated, so I hurriedly added.

“I just want to know your point of view on this situation.”

“My point of view? Why?”

“I want to understand why you are doing this.”

Actually, this was a cover-up.

The information I know is fragmented, fragmented in parts. A thread, a story, was needed to thread all these miscellaneous beads into one story.

And Camilla took my request quite seriously. In the middle, I sent eyes that seemed to say, ‘You know?’, But it was still pretty concise.

Elsa is a country sandwiched between Minsk in the west and Römer in the east. The land is large, natural resources are abundant, and the land is fertile, but the population is much smaller than Minsk and Römer.

This is because people have been constantly being attacked by Minsk and Roemer for nearly a thousand years, and people have been dying. Except for a very short period, Elsa had never been an independent government. Römer, or Minsk.

The reason Elsa didn’t disappear was because of the ‘curse’. ‘Elsa’s Curse’ is not a curse in a shamanistic sense, but a political and economic dilemma.

Elza’s land is vast and rich in resources. It means that if you make up your mind and hide somewhere, it will be difficult to find until you are called.

That’s why the Elsa people didn’t give in. Even after such a long time had passed, they still did not abandon their identity as Elsa people and fought relentlessly.

Family. Relatives. Neighbor. Someone died at the hands of Roemer and Minsk. Not a single generation has passed. Hatred and vengeance grew from generation to generation like a snowball. The result was a constant struggle.

The stronger country between Minsk and Römer occupies Elza, but at that moment, enormous administrative and military power is wasted. While struggling to digest Elsa, the other country gathers strength to catch Elsa out of the way and takes Elsa back in a vicious cycle.

This is Elsa’s curse.

Have you realized something from the many follies? Eventually, Minsk and Roemer signed an agreement. It was a pact to divide Elsa in half and rule it.

The West was ruled by Minsk and the East by Römer. The two states did not directly rule Elza. A deputy composed of Elza people was put forward.

Those who were loyal to them, those who would trample others like worms for their own ends and means, were carefully selected and placed. Leaders, civil servants, soldiers, police, teachers and nurses….

“It’s no surprise that police, fire and court officials have turned into gangs. They were originally like that.

Although they are from Elza, they want to be Römer or Minsk people. He tries to prove himself by persecuting the inferior Elsa people, but in the eyes of the people in his real country, he just looks like a monkey imitating people.

That’s why they can’t leave the non-human sanctuary. The moment they get out of here, they know what their situation will be.”

Soldiers in helicopters came to mind.

“Is the National Military Police like that too?”

“It is mixed. The executives are dispatched from Römer, or they are an organization of collaborators imbued with Roemer’s ideology. They know that the Elza Autonomous Police are nothing short of thugs.

That’s why the military police were stationed there, even though there were police. There might be an intention to block the attack.”

“What attack?”

“Counterattack from Minsk. If Minsk attacks while the National Gendarmerie is on alert, that will call for automatic military intervention against Elsa and Römer.”

The treaty between Minsk and Roemer lasted for a long time, but the relationship between the two countries was getting worse day by day. This is because the national power of Minsk is getting stronger day by day and the balance of power is out of order.

Minsk has successfully established a political system of unlimited competition, free market economy, and corporate state federation.

Roemer, on the other hand, introduced a parliamentary dictatorship. It’s a good word, ‘Councilor’, but in fact, it was no different from giving a congressman’s coat of arms to the aristocratic and military families that ruled Römer for generations.

Both countries put forward a democratic republic, but literally only put up a signboard. However, it was obvious to anyone that Minsk was ahead of Römer, a rigid country.

After all, 10 years ago, Minsk claimed ownership of Elza and declared war.

The momentum was great. In Minsk, the soldiers were armed with high-end equipment and were made up of well-paid professionals. Römer, on the other hand, was full of volunteers who had come for another bowl of potato porridge.

And 10 days later, Minsk declared total surrender.

Roemer’s high-altitude bombers accurately hit 12 secret underground bunkers in Minsk. All of the vice ministers and above, including the president and prime minister, died, the presidents of five corporate associations and the board of directors disappeared, and the integrated command, which coordinated tactical strategies and contact networks of the five corporations, completely collapsed.

Minsk was blinded and deaf in one morning, and his limbs were cut off. The army that came in vigorously sold their equipment to the people of Elsa and fled.

What happened after that was even more confusing. It was clear that Römer had infiltrated the spy, but he couldn’t figure out how.

The five companies sued, accused, slandered, and exposed each other according to their interests, and the fortunes of the country declined day by day.

In the meantime, Roemer occupied the rest of Elsa, set up a puppet government, and forced the signing of a forcible contract stating that ‘Minsk supports Elsa’s independent independence’.

Minsk generally agreed, but with conditions. He said that heavy weapons equipment such as tanks, armored vehicles, and fighters would be removed from Elza’s land.

Römer accepted the presumptuous condition of ‘for peace in our time.’ If an all-out war broke out again, Römer could have suffered great damage.

Elsa fell into the hands of Roemer, but circumstances changed. Minsk’s advanced military equipment was unleashed on the black market, further increasing supply and demand.

Those who dreamed of Elsa’s independence staged an armed uprising, and Roemer, who had taken this opportunity to completely destroy Elsa, continued the fierce suppression.

Then the zombie apocalypse broke out.

“The Römers did what they always did. It divided the areas where humans could be protected and those where they could not be protected. We’re putting up high fences and keeping vigils to keep the disease from spreading further. The same goes for West Minsk.”

“Then this is… “

“The unreserved zone has become a completely lawless zone. In the long run, there are two options left to the people of this land.

Become a zombie and die slowly, or be tamed by crossing into a human reserve where Römer is establishing a new order. Either die in the dumpster or live in the corral.”

As I listened quietly, I felt a strange sense of difference. Something was strange. Is this correct? I want to think. But at the time, I didn’t know exactly what it was, so I just moved on. Camilla added her words.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen a helicopter fly over a human-free zone. Originally, helicopters only fly in protected areas. To attack those who are uprising there.

Isn’t that convenient from the point of view of Römer? Minsk’s weapons are too loose. It’s hard to overpower them all.

So I don’t care if I die in the unprotected area or not. Instead, focus only on policing the reservations. Everything in it is censored and controlled. Eventually….”

“Elza will lose even her weapon.”

“Right. They only ‘manage’ the zombies, they have no intention of ‘wiping out’ them. I don’t have the energy or ability to do that.

Because of the treaty, there are no tanks or fighters in the land of Elza, only small arms. Not to mention the miserable administrative power. It is not a normal country.”

Camilla smiled, but she looked oddly sad.

“People call the Liberation Front fighters dreamers. Elsa’s independent government is an illusion. That’s right. We hardly ever had our own government.

But… You don’t have to give the right answer. If you try to erase the wrong answers one by one, the only one that remains will be the correct answer. And as for slaves, that’s the wrong answer. Elsa people should treat Elsa people equally.”

* * * * *

A loud gunshot was heard. This is the sound from the side where Camilla penetrated. The gunfire continued from end to end of the building. It means she is alive and moving.

Inadvertently, I thought I was lucky.

Good luck?

Is this a good thing?

Blink your eyes and review the situation below. Zombies continue to enter the resort.

The people inside form a defensive line and hold out well, but they will all die soon. There are too many zombies and the defenses are scattered. At this rate, each will be destroyed.

Why don’t these people worry about zombies?

Even Camilla looks a little strange. She talked lightly about zombies as if it was just a cold.

She spoke rather of her patriotism, her hatred of Römer and Minsk, her love for her nation.

The fight against the zombie virus is not a priority.

The same human beings are more feared, hated, and hated than that.

The thought of being destroyed because of zombies is not even in the calculation. Rather, they are using the virus as a political tool.

These people are not even aware of zombies. Everyone is too careless. Now I understand why Cassandra told me, ‘Only you speak of the apocalypse.’

I wasn’t the only one using zombies. It was the same with all the people of this land.

Somehow. Strangely, I felt at ease. I think I know the identity of this familiarity.

I was a very ordinary human being in this world.

“…But I’m the one who knows zombies best here.”

Correction. I am the most ordinary and smartest human being in this world.

“I’ll have to do some testing.”
