Chapter 285: Beyond the Curtain

Hogwarts Card Drawer

"Can you stand up?" Harry called into the ear of Neville, who was crawling on the ground, because Neville's legs were still trembling uncontrollably. "Put your arm around my neck—"

Neville did as he did - Harry straightened up - Neville's legs were still running around, they couldn't support him, when suddenly a man appeared and knocked them both to the ground, Neville's legs shook violently like an overturned beetle, and Harry raised his left arm in the air trying not to let the glass shatter.

Suddenly, above them, two more doors were thrown open, and five more men burst in: Sirius, Lupine, Moody, Tonks, and Kingsley.

A Death Eater turned to raise his wand, but Tonks had already cast a Stunning Spell at him. Harry didn't look to see if it hit, but jumped off the platform.

The Death Eaters were distracted by the presence of members of the Order of the Phoenix. Now, members of the Order of the Phoenix are casting spells on them. Harry could see Neville curled up over the running figures and the flickering lights. He dodged another red light and lunged at Neville.

"Are you all right?" he called, as another spell flew over their heads.

"It's okay," Neville said, trying to stand up.

The stone door between them had been struck open by a spell, leaving a hole where Neville's hand had been; both of them had crawled away when, out of nowhere, a heavy arm appeared , grabbed Harry by the neck and lifted him up until his feet couldn't touch the ground.

"Give it to me," growled a voice in his ear, "give me the prophecy—"

The man pinched Harry so hard he couldn't even get up. Through wet eyes he saw Sirius wrestling a Death Eater ten feet away; Kingsley fighting a two-for-one; Up there, no one noticed that Harry was dying.

He pointed his wand at the man, but breathlessly spoke a spell, while the man's other hand was groping for Harry's prophetic hand—

"Ahhhhhh~~~~~~!"

Neville emerged from out of nowhere; instead of uttering a spell, he jabbed Hermione's wand at the Death Eater's mask. The man let go of Harry immediately with a roar of pain. Harry looked at his face and gasped, "Damn out!"

The Death Eater fell backwards, his mask slipping off; he was McConnell, Buckbeak's established butcher, and one of his eyes was now swollen and bloodshot.

"Thanks!" said Harry to Neville, who pulled him aside as Sirius and a Death Eater passed by, fighting so hard that their wands were stained; Harry had to Ming touched a round hard object, and he slipped.

For a moment he thought he had dropped the orb, but he saw Moody's magic eye spinning on the ground.

"Harry, find the others and go!" Sirius Black came running from a distance, waving his wand and blocked a spell for them.

Harry grabbed Neville by the shoulders of his robes and pulled him up the first stone steps; Neville's legs trembled and couldn't support his weight; Harry pulled all his strength and they went up another step -

A spell struck the step at Harry's heel; the step shattered and he fell back onto the steps below. Neville fell to the ground, his legs still shaking heavily, and he stuffed the prophecy into his pocket.

"Come on!" Harry said desperately, tugging on Neville's robes. "Try lifting your leg—"

He gave another tug and Neville's robes tore through the notch on the left side - the little spinning glass ball fell out of his pocket and before either of them could grab it. , Neville kicked it with a trembling leg; it flew ten feet to the right and landed on the steps below them.

As the two of them stared at where it shattered,

Surprised at what happened. A pearly white figure with huge eyes floated in the air, unnoticed by anyone but them.

A pearly white figure with huge eyes floated above. Harry could see its mouth moving but he couldn't hear a word of the prophecy because of the banging and roaring all around them. After the figure finished speaking, it disappeared into the air.

"Harry, I'm sorry!" Neville yelled, his face pained from shaking legs. "I'm terribly sorry, Harry, I didn't mean to—"

"It's okay!" Harry yelled. "Try to stand up, we have to leave—"

Before Harry could finish his sentence, a red light flashed over his head.

Now that only one pair was hitting, Harry saw Sirius dodge the red light of Lestland; he was laughing at her.

"Come on, you can do better than you are!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the house.

Another light hit him right across the chest.

The smile hadn't left his face yet, but his eyes were full of horror.

Harry let go of Neville, though he didn't realize he let go of him. He jumped down the steps again, drawing his wand, and at the same moment Dumbledore turned towards the platform.

It seemed as if it took Sirius a long time to fall; his body curled into a graceful arch as he fell backward through the rough curtains of the archway.

As Sirius fell down the ancient hallway and disappeared behind the curtains, Harry saw an expression of horror and surprise on his decayed, once-handsome face. The curtain fluttered for a while like a gust of wind, and then calmed down.

Harry heard Bellatrix Lestrange's triumphant cheer, but knew it was nothing—Sirius had just tumbled down the corridor, and he would emerge from the other side at any moment.

But Sirius didn't show up.

"Sirius!" Harry yelled, "Sirius!"

He was on the floor, his breath hot. Sirius must be behind the curtain, and he, Harry, could pull him out.

But as he sprinted towards the ledge, Lupine put his arms around Harry and pulled him back.

"There's nothing you can do, Harry—"

"Help him, save him, he's just behind the curtain!"

"Too late, Harry."

"We can still catch him-" Harry struggled desperately, but Lupine wouldn't let go.

"There's nothing you can do, Harry. There's nothing. He's gone."

"He's not gone!" Harry yelled.

He didn't believe it; he wouldn't believe it at all; he still fought Lupine with all his might. What Lupine didn't understand were the people hiding behind the curtains, Harry had heard them whispering when he first entered the room. Sirius was hiding there, just out of sight.

"Sirius!" he yelled. "Sirius!"
