Chapter 254 Debate

"A defensive spell?" said Professor Umbridge, with a slight smile. "Why, I need you to use the defensive spell in my class, Miss Granger. Surely you don't want to be attacked in class."

"Can't we use magic?" Ron yelled first.

"In my class, the first thing students say is to raise their hands. Also, you are..."

"Weasley." Ron said and raised his hand quickly.

"It seems that Gryffindor's courage only educates rebellious students who contradict the teacher." Although Draco also thought this class was boring, he would not let go of anything that could hurt Harry and the others.

"Draco, I wouldn't say that if I were you." Kronos patted Draco on the shoulder, and Draco turned his head to look at Kronos suspiciously.

"Slytherin's rules, be wise and protect yourself, don't get caught in the fire at this time." Kronos said earnestly like an old man, making Daphne on the side roll her eyes at them frequently.

Professor Umbridge on the podium smiled more kindly, and turned his back to Ron. Harry and Hermione immediately raised their hands too. Professor Umbridge's puffy eyes rested on Harry for a moment, and then she said to Hermione:

"What, Miss Granger? Do you have any other questions?"

"Yes," said Hermione, "of course the overall aim of Defense Against the Dark Arts should be to practice defensive spells, shouldn't it?"

"Are you an education specialist in the Department of Magic, Miss Granger?" Professor Umbridge said in her sweet voice, but she was a little more hypocritical, and Chronos thought she was running out of patience.

"No, but—"

"Okay, I'm afraid you're not yet qualified to determine what the point of any class is. Wizards smarter than you, much older, have given us what to study. You'll learn how to defend against magic in a safe, risk-free way. curse-"

"What's the use?" Harry said aloud, unable to hold back anymore. "It doesn't help if we're going to be attacked—"

"Hands up, Mr. Potter!" said Professor Umbridge, in a soprano voice.

Harry poked his hand into the air. Again, Professor Umbridge turned swiftly away, but now more hands were raised. Chronos glanced at it, and found that those who raised their hands were really Gryffindors.

"What's your name?" Professor Umbridge said to Dean.

"Dean Thomas."

"Go ahead, Mr. Thomas."

"So, that's what Harry said, isn't it?" said Dean. "It's not going to be dangerous if we're under attack."

"As I said," said Professor Umbridge, giving Dean a provocative smile, "do you wish to be attacked in class?"

"No, but—"

Professor Umbridge interrupted. "I don't want to criticize a thing that's going on in this school," she said, with an unconvincing smile on her wide mouth. "But you've exposed the class. Some very unreliable wizards, very unreliable—needless to say," she smiled menacingly, "especially the half-breed ones."

"If you're talking about Professor Lupine," Dean grew annoyed, "he's the nicest thing we've ever met—"

"Shut up! Mr. Thomas! As I said, when you learn some complicated spells, and spells not suitable for your age can have fatal effects. When you encounter black spells at other times, you just would be horrified to believe that I was right."

"No," said Hermione, "we're just—"

"Your hand is not raised, Miss Granger!"

Hermione held up her hand, and Professor Umbridge turned away from her.

"As far as I understand it, my ex didn't just cast an illegal spell in front of you, he actually cast the spell on you."

"Okay, he turned into a lunatic, didn't he?" Dean retorted fiercely, "mind you, even though he was a lunatic, we still learned a lot from him."

"Your hand is not raised, Mr. Thomas!" Professor Umbridge's voice trembled. "Now, studying the theory of the Ministry of Magic will be enough to pass your exams, and after all, all about the school. What's your name?" she added, watching Parvati, whose hand had just been raised s student.

"Parvati Patil. But doesn't the Wizarding Defense Against the Dark Arts test involve a bit of practical experience? Shouldn't we hypothetically demonstrate the defense spells and things we actually do?"

"As long as you've learned enough theory, and long enough, there's no reason why a spell couldn't be done under careful, carefully controlled conditions," said Umbridge contemptuously.

"Without pre-practice?" Parvati said skeptically. "Are you telling me that the first time we cast magic was during exams?"

"I repeat, as long as you spend enough time learning enough theory—"

"What's the use of theory in the real world?" Harry asked loudly, raising his fists high again.

"This is school, Mr. Potter, not the real world." She said suicidally.

"Then don't we need to prepare for everything outside?"

"There's nothing waiting for you out there, Mr Potter."

"Oh, is it?" Harry said, his emotions, beneath the surface, already boiling.

"You want to attack the child? Yourselves?" asked Professor Umbridge in a sweet and terrifying voice.

"Well, let me see," Harry replied in a voice that pretended to be thoughtful, "Maybe, Voldemort?"

Ron began to gasp, Lavender-Brown let out a small scream, and Neville slid out of his chair.

"Cronos, shouldn't you say something?" Harry felt that his weight was not enough, so he could only call that person out.

All eyes fell on Kronos for a while.

Kronos lazily stood up, he knew that his status as a bystander was over, and he was now also a debater in this debate.

"Mr. Slughorn. You should raise your hands first and then stand up." Chronos had the illusion that she seemed afraid of me from Professor Umbridge's tone.

"Now that things are up, we don't need to pay too much attention to these trivial rules, Professor Umbridge." Just like before, Chronos raised a hand lazily.

"But I didn't ask you to get up and answer the question. This is still in my class." Professor Umbridge's voice was a little louder.

"However, the students all hope that I can say something." Kronos waved his hand.
