When writing "We Are Champions", many of the characters were shaped by reference to myself and the youthful classmates when I was in school. When writing "The Godfather of Champions", this condition was not available.

Speaking of Tony Dunn’s inspiration for shaping, it does not come from any real-life coach. Although he looks a lot like Mourinho. But in fact, this image came to my mind for the first time because of a movie I watched a long time ago.

That movie I mentioned many times in "We Are The Champions", it was "Fighting Sunday" starring Al Pacino, which is a film reflecting American professional football, and Al Pacino starred in it— —Tony D’Amato, a former champion coach of down-and-out rugby who is too old to keep up with the times.

I have always been a fan of Al Pacino, and I am naturally obsessed with the image of the coach he has portrayed. Then came the idea of ​​writing a coach like Al Pacino. He is not sloppy, he is full of swear words, his words are not rough, he is not angry, his voice is hoarse, his body language is rich, He is stubborn, he will suffer setbacks, will be teased and mocked, and of course he will slap all opponents in the end.

In this way, Tony Dunn came out. Choosing "Tony" as the name is also a tribute to the character portrayed by Al Pacino.

So writing Tony Dunn’s story is a kind of enjoyment for me most of the time. I can feel that my ideal head coach is leaping on paper little by little, becoming a living credible, popular or unwelcome person who cannot be ignored.

I like to create characters. Nothing makes me feel more fulfilled than creating a living person.

I write a little bit and improve him a little bit. From a frivolous, arrogant young man who crashed into the world of professional football, to an old man at the age of fifty who knew his destiny and calmed down, I wrote slowly, and my heart changed with this process. I imagined myself as frivolous as him. Impulsive, rough words are not rough, I also imagine that after experiencing too many things like him, I will return to calm, longing for plainness.

This is why the ending of "The Godfather of Champions" is not as sensational as "We are the Champions". For Zhang Jun, retiring is his most glamorous ending suddenly and quietly. The contrast is quite big, so it is even more touching. But Tony is different. He slowly took away the dazzling light, like a slowly withering flower. The whole process was a matter of course, as expected, as if descending a step, step by step. Very natural.

This is the ending that is in line with Dunn's character, so I handled it as it is now—something plain, not gorgeous enough, but showing a deep warmth and a touch of distress.
