90 – Wizard’s Duel

Thesis re-examination is literally the process of reviewing and confirming the contents of a thesis anew. Depending on the results of the review, the grade imposed on the existing thesis can be canceled or raised, but there are almost no cases where the grade is raised even in the history of magic.

Most of the paper reexaminations were held because of research irregularities. In other words, there is an ethical problem in the existing thesis, and the evaluation of it is renewed. Therefore, re-examination of the thesis itself was a great disgrace and humiliation for the researcher.

The reason why the content of the thesis is not a major factor in the re-examination of the thesis is simple. In the first place, this is because a paper written by a human being cannot contain the perfect truth.

The great men who left their names in history are also subject to refutation of the principles they invented as time goes by. This was the fate of Ji Seongsa, and it was a very natural phenomenon.

If the content of the paper is wrong, it is to attack it with another paper, not to correct it through reexamination. This was a common perception among wizards.

Nevertheless, it is rare to request reexamination of a thesis because of its content. In other words, it was a very aggressive claim that shouted, ‘This paper is full of nonsense from one to ten, so its very existence is denial!’ That’s why wizards called this act ‘quill duel’.

Continental Mage Tower Council Conference

Alexander Bond had challenged Ralph Leoris to a duel at such an extraordinary occasion.

The race of wizards who dig up the truth are naturally suspicious. All exploration begins with doubting the existing, and breaking common sense was a task that wizards who broadened the horizons of cognition accepted as fate.

Recognized archmages don’t even believe in themselves. None of those who have stepped on the steps of the Archmage would think that their discovery or research would be immortal. Of course, Ralph Leoris was one of them.

The healing

It was a thesis that Ralph Leoris made by melting everything he had. It was the crystallization of his doubts, and it was the result of his values for magic.

The healing was, of course, not a commentary that contained only one’s taste. It was a study that brilliantly solved the magical theory, and gave Ralph the title of ‘Sage of Disclosure’.

That’s why Ralph was confident. He was convinced that although his theory was one of many magical currents that would one day be dispelled, it would not lose its status as long as he lived, or at least not until thirty years to come.

Even though there is a proverb that a wizard’s confidence is like poison, Ralph couldn’t let go of his confidence in his research.

It wasn’t just Ralph. The other wizards on the council who read his thesis couldn’t find any contradiction in Ralph’s theory. His thesis explained so clearly what they knew and did not know.

Numerous other magic researchers who were jealous of the Leoris family tried hard to find loopholes in the thesis, but all attempts failed. And those failures graded Ralph’s thesis a diamond.

So the thoughts of the wizards in the conference hall were divided into two.

One is ‘Sir Bond has finally gone senile!’

The other one is ‘Sir Bond is anxious to leave the council!’

It was safe to say that there was absolutely no support for Alexander Bond. I sure did….

“Sir Ralph Leoris. Based on Lord Leoris’ theory, answer the following five difficult questions.”

As the war of words between Bond and Ralph continued, the colors of the people watching the debate changed. Those who did not doubt that this war of words would end with the downfall of Alexander Bond did not hide their surprise at Bond’s unexpectedly strong argument.

“It is….”

Ralph was the first to be speechless at Bond’s sharp question. It was Ralph who had solidly rejected the opponent’s argument based on the theory of the thesis. However, at some point, he fell into an unanswerable dead end.

“We are still working on that. But wouldn’t that be a factor in my theory being wrong?”

“Because the rock of your theory is wrong, you can’t come up with a proper answer.”

“…That’s insulting.”

“If I were to present an answer to the above question on a theoretical basis contrary to yours, would you accept that fact?”

Ralph widened his eyes at Bond’s insistence. The meeting attendees also had the same expression as Ralph.

What Bond just said was that he would solve the unsolved riddle of the century right here.

“That makes no sense!”

Therese Brown stood up from her seat, her eyes wide open. However, Bond did not even give him a glance.

“I will present the answer here. Public discussions become impromptu lectures, so it’s not too much of a burden.”

He said that with an expression that was not at all burdensome.

As Bond moved his finger, the writing appeared in the air in the form of a hologram. Of course, no one was surprised by the skill that the archmage Bond used. What surprised people was not the hologram, but the content written on it.

“Sir Ralph claims completely different….”

“What? Then, is there no connection between attribute magic and healing magic? That it was all our illusions?”

“Not yet. Let’s watch a little longer.”

The meeting was already over 5 hours long, but no one pointed it out. No matter what anyone said, the people gathered here were the giants of the magic world. There was not a single person who was not interested in a subject that could change the paradigm of the current flow of magic.

“If you divide all the variables independently like this, the biting contradiction disappears. The observation results will come out like my calculations.”

“……”

After Bond’s lengthy lecture, the conference room was as cold as ice water. Even Teresa Brown, who had defended his theories more vigorously than Ralph, could not straighten her hard face. Bond’s theory had no loopholes in his eyes.

“Then, I would like to ask your opinion at this point. That’s why I bothered to bring up this subject here.”

Said Bond, spreading his arms wide.

“O seekers of the great intellect. I, Alexander Bond’s theory, can explain all the contradictions that Sir Ralph Leoris’ theory cannot. And fewer formulas and fewer variables. No, beyond that, it proves the fact that Lord Leoris’ theory is complete nonsense.”

“……”

Ralph’s mouth was as heavy as a rock.

“Sir Leoris. Do you understand enough? That our theories are incompatible. After all, either our land revolves around the sun, or the sun orbits our land.”

“I understand.”

After hearing Ralph’s answer, Bond looked at the other wizards with a satisfied expression.

“If you are also intellectuals, do not be silent and answer. What is right and what is wrong!”

There was silence. It was a long silence. The wizards could not open their mouths easily as they only noticed each other.

Then a wizard barely raised his hand. He was a new mage who had just become a full member of the Council. Of course, he was a newcomer to the council, but he was already an executive in the magic world.

“Hey, Leeson Woodward. I will support Lord Bond’s theory.”

Starting with that, the other wizards raised their hands in haphazard order.

“Jill Pritchard. I agree with Lord Bond.”

“Romaine Hicks. I think Lord Bond’s theory is correct.”

“Kazan Edward. Lord Bond’s theory….”

Like a wildfire that spreads in an instant, the opinion of the conference room leaned toward Alexander Bond. Seeing this, Bond looked at Ralph with a satisfied smile. Ralph kept his expressionless expression, but he couldn’t hide his trembling hands.

“Teres Brown. I express my neutrality.”

Even Teresa Brown was only neutral on the grounds that she hadn’t sufficiently examined Bond’s theories.

“More than 80 percent support Lord Bond’s theory. Sir Ralph. As it is….”

Cola Wheeler whispered in a low voice, and Ralph hung his head in silence.

“mmm! According to the dissertation re-examination procedure, the defender, Sir Ralph Leoris, is given two weeks of calling time. A lot of people come from busy places, so we’ll end the conference here.”

Chairman Woods’ voice spread loudly throughout the conference room.

The weekend passed quickly. Sarah returned to the academy.

-Dad! Paper review, I can help!

-No. This is my job And, you also have academy classes.

-The Leoris family has been insulted like this, and you want me to stay still?

-Sarah. Honestly, you’re no help. As a father, I know better than anyone that you are talented. But, you haven’t even understood this thesis yet.

-That, it’s not about attribute magic, it’s just something I haven’t read!

-It takes more than a month for you to understand the theory, no matter how small it is. Honestly, it’s more helpful to leave Dad alone for now.

Sara couldn’t answer her father’s words. In the end, she returned to the Teletulle Academy.

My dad was obviously a great wizard. Having inherited that talent, he knew better than anyone else. So, Dad will overcome this crisis casually. Sara wanted to believe that.

‘But….’

Looking at the newspaper, it seemed that public opinion was surprisingly leaning towards Alexander Bond.

Alexander Bond

The Bond family has been a magical family specializing in healing magic for generations. It’s not as much as the Leoris family, but it’s a famous family that has produced a lot of Archmages. This fight was like playing on the opponent’s home ground.

“Ms. Leoris.”

A voice that calls to you in a friendly way.

It was John’s voice.

“John. Did you have a good weekend?”

“I was busy. I’m cleaning up the mess….”

“Insolvency? Ah, come to think of it, I heard that Yohan made a new circle. 1St grade is a circle. Incredible.”

“hahahaha. In fact, I was looking for Miss Leoris because of that. I didn’t see him over the weekend, so I thought he went back to his parents’ house.”

“Oh, yes. I went to my hometown. But, if that’s the case….”

At Sarah’s question, John said with a twinkle in his eyes.

“I want to invite Miss Leoris to my circle!”
